As the principal, I not only focus on students' academic achievements and conduct, but I also try to provide them with eye-opening, horizon-broadening activities that help them understand the world and connect with it. Therefore, I arrange different study tours every year, such as exchange programs with sister schools in mainland China, "Mainland Exchange Programme for Junior Secondary School and upper Primary Students" tours organized by the Education Bureau, and other study tours. The school also arranges overseas trips by plane each term, and one of them is always to an English-speaking country to help improve students' English proficiency. In 2018, the school organized trips to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and Singapore, but all exchange programs were suspended due to the pandemic. This year, as things have returned to normal, we first participated in the Zhuhai, Guangzhou, and Shanghai exchange tours organized by the Education Bureau. We also visited our sister school in Xinhui. The highlight this year was the trip to Brisbane, Australia. |

On 15th June, a group of 16 of us, consisting of 14 Primary 5 and 6 students, Ms. Fu and myself, embarked on the study tour. We first flew to Sydney, Australia, and then transferred to Brisbane. Upon arriving at Brisbane Airport, we were greeted by a cloudless, azure sky and fresh, invigorating air, which set the perfect backdrop for the start of our tour. |

I was very impressed by the students' performance during the trip. They were highly cooperative and made a concerted effort to communicate with the locals in English. Despite having to endure nearly 20 hours of flight time, they remained patient and did not complain. When some students fell ill, they took the medication provided by their families, rested as much as possible, and refrained from voicing any complaints. Their fellow classmates showed great care, even lending their jackets to the sick students. The students were also mindful not to disrupt others and hoped to recover quickly so they could continue enjoying the trip. This level of consideration deeply touched me. |

The highlight of this study tour was the opportunity to attend the local Ashmore State School. The students were paired up with local "buddy" students and spent the first three days attending classes, recess, and lunch together. This not only helped improve the students' English proficiency but also boosted their confidence and understanding of the local culture. Every morning, the tour guide teacher, Mr. Junior, taught the students English and local culture in a class called "Culture and Language," which was similar to our weekly Language and Culture class at LTY on Thursday. Mr. Junior used clear and simple English to teach the students, and he often employed various activities to stimulate their learning interest. |

Another highlight was the homestay experience. The students were divided into six groups and placed with local host families. On the first day of our arrival in Brisbane, the host parents picked up the students from school in the evening and welcomed them into their homes. They would then drive the students to and from school every day, and prepare lunch for them. Some host families even took the students on additional excursions, allowing them to further immerse in the Australian way of life. The homestay experience was a meaningful learning opportunity, as the students were required to communicate in English throughout their stay. |

||||
The students also had the opportunity to go sightseeing. On the first day of arrival, they visited the Queensland Museum to learn about the nature and cultural heritages. The students were very engaged and even had the courage to interact with the local insects. Before visiting the museum, we had our lunch on the grass at the Southbank Parklands, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. I believe this relaxed atmosphere provided the students with a hands-on experience of the leisurely Australian lifestyle. |

On the day before our departure, we all went to the famous Gold Coast. The students ran, rolled, and played ball games on the beach. Afterward, they went to an ice cream shop and souvenir stores, using their English to purchase the items they wanted and calculate the exchange rate. I was pleased to see them so engaged in the learning process. At lunchtime, Mr. Junior took the students to a fast-food restaurant, which was another opportunity for them to practice their English. In the afternoon, we visited the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where the students had a memorable experience interacting with the local animals. Seeing their happiness made me feel that the arrangements for this trip were worthwhile. |

At the same time, this learning trip was not without its challenges. The itinerary was very tight, with activities from morning till night. Although everyone was grateful for the opportunity to learn so intensively, they sometimes felt a bit fatigued. Overall, this learning experience was very valuable and enlightening. As students who had never visited Brisbane, Australia before, they were deeply captivated by the natural beauty of the Brisbane region, from the winding Brisbane River to the lush parks and gardens that cover the city. The architectural landscape of the city was also fascinating, with a blend of modern skyscrapers and historic colonial buildings that left a lasting impression. I look forward to continuing to create more valuable international exchange opportunities for the students in the future, allowing the LTY students to truly appreciate the wisdom of " He that travels far knows much." |
