Students participating in the "Taipei Science and Environmental Study Tour" gathered at school early in the morning around 5:20 a.m. to board the coach to Hong Kong International Airport. We arrived at the airport around 6:00 a.m. where we completed a series of immigration procedures and checked in our luggage. We boarded Cathay Pacific at 8:30 a.m. for our flight to Taipei. By around noon, we had arrived in Taipei and took a coach for our lunch destination. After lunch, we headed to our first attraction — the "SHA YANG YE Robot Wonderland." At this wonderland, students could create solar-powered little dinosaurs, and they were very engaged in completing their projects. Everyone successfully made their dinosaur. After that, we also visited various inventions and engaged in interactive games with the technology. In the evening, we headed to Shilin Night Market. Before dinner, we had some time, so teachers took the students to play at some game stalls, and everyone had a great time. One particularly touching moment was when a student won a grand prize in a game—a large stuffed toy. He decided not to keep the large toy but instead exchanged it for three smaller toys to share with his classmates who played with him, wishing to spread the joy to others.Feeling happy, we all enjoyed teppanyaki for dinner, and everyone ate heartily, leaving our clothes and hair smelling like the food. Upon returning to the hotel, teachers first explained and summarized the day's learning, then allowed the students to check and organize their notes in their rooms. Around 9:30 p.m. the teacher checked in on different rooms and noticed that some students were quite tired because they had woken up too early, so everyone ready to go to bed. |

Everyone was able to arrive at the hotel restaurant for breakfast by 7:45 a.m. This was because teachers went to each room at 7:15 a.m. to remind the students to wake up. In one room, the teacher knocked for 15 minutes with no response, so he had to go to the reception to get a spare room key. When he opened the door, he found the students still asleep, as they were too comfortable. Our first visit was to the " Taipower Exhibit Center in Northern Taiwan," where students learned about how nuclear power is generated and the methods of electricity production. Everyone listened attentively to the guide’s explanations and eagerly participated in various interactive activities in the exhibition hall, which made them very happy. For lunch, we went to a restaurant near Yehliu Geo-Park. For our second destination, we headed to the " Tzu Chi Environmental Action Centre" which is mainly assisted by volunteers, many of whom are elderly. Here, everyone learned about the importance of environmental protection and waste sorting. The most meaningful part was that all the students participated in related environmental activities, such as tearing pages from books and sorting the paper. Surprisingly, the students were very engaged, even reluctant to leave. They reluctantly made their way to the Environmental Technology Museum, where they learned about the different ways humans have come up with to make the Earth healthier, incorporating some values education which was an extremely meaningful activity. For our third destination, we visited the " Fire Safety Museum of Taipei City Fire Department" which is very popular among schools because students can learn about the formation of earthquakes and how to protect themselves during an earthquake. They also had the opportunity to experience how to react when faced with an earthquake. All the students participated seriously. Another activity surprised and delighted the students: learning how to protect themselves during a fire. They needed to enter a simulated fire room filled with smoke, where they had to find the exit as quickly as possible. Everyone felt nervous but eager to participate, and in the end, they managed to complete the activity safely. Before leaving, everyone had the chance to learn how to spray water like firefighters, and they were thrilled, continuously spraying water onto the walls. For dinner, we went to a famous restaurant to enjoy their renowned soup dumplings, and everyone ate with great happiness. After dinner, we returned to the hotel, where teachers did the debriefing of the day’s activities with the students. Afterward, everyone returned to their rooms to rest, but we received a wonderful surprise. One student’s mother, who is Taiwanese, was very hospitable and arranged for her family to deliver bubble tea and red bean or cream-filled wheel cakes to each student. She wanted everyone to enjoy local delicacies from her hometown and bring joy to the group. We sincerely thank the parents for their kindness, which made everyone feel cosy. |

Having learned from the first day's experience, we checked the rooms at 7:15 a.m. and everyone was able to wake up on time and complete breakfast punctually. Today, we first visited the " Taipei-National Taiwan Science Education Center " which is a very suitable place for students. It features various topics such as human anatomy, knowledge of flora and fauna, and fun science principles. We couldn't explore everything, but the students showed a particular interest in learning about the human body. Not only were the various body parts introduced in an accessible manner, but students also had the opportunity to simulate being pregnant to understand the experiences of women during pregnancy. Of course, they especially enjoyed playing in the area dedicated to science principles, where they could revert to being children and enjoy various play stations. Unfortunately, time was limited, so we had to focus on certain highlights, hoping to return and participate again next time. For lunch, we had braised pork rice. When the braised pork rice was served, its smell made everyone drool, and we loved it even more because we could help ourselves to refills. In the end, we consumed a total of 37 bowls of braised pork rice—impressive, right? In the afternoon, we visited the " The Muzha Refuse Incineration Plant" where some non-recyclable waste is processed through incineration. The most shocking moment for everyone was when we entered the incineration area and saw the garbage being picked up with large claws and moved to the incineration furnace. Seeing the seemingly bottomless pile of garbage left us feeling a bit disheartened and reminded us to avoid creating any waste in the future. After that, we headed to the "Museum of Drinking Water-History" which is very spacious and features elegant architecture. The buildings previously housed machinery related to water transportation and are now used as exhibition halls. The exterior of the museum showcases various large installations that display different water treatment tools, allowing visitors to take photos and learn about them. In the evening, we all tried Taiwanese beef noodles, and everyone enjoyed the meal immensely. |

After breakfast, we headed to the "Suho Paper Memorial Museum". This place is a three-story independent building with a rooftop, and upon entering, we felt a sense of comfort and therapeutic. The entire venue revolves around the theme of "paper," specifically recycled paper. First, we went to the rooftop where everyone learned about papermaking. Despite the slightly cold weather, the students' enthusiasm and engagement made them forget everything else! In the end, everyone was able to create their own sheets of paper, and each student received a certificate as a keepsake. We then moved to the basement, which housed many machines. The students stood on a platform and listened as a staff member explained the history of papermaking and how the process transitioned from manual labor to machines. Seeing the students' dedication and their interactions with the presenter reinforced my belief in the importance of "Experiential Learning." For lunch, we enjoyed our last meal in Taiwan, featuring Hakka cuisine. Steamed meat patties and steamed eggs were the most popular dishes among the students. Interestingly, many of them did not eat fish, which surprised us a bit. After lunch, we headed to the hot spring area—Beitou. When we entered the "Thermal Valley" the students were excited to see steam rising from the water, accompanied by a sulfur smell, although the odor made some of them feel a bit uncomfortable. Some students even wanted to try soaking in the hot springs, but unfortunately, we didn't have enough time. Instead, we visited the Hot Spring Museum to learn more. Since it was a holiday, there were many visitors, and we had to wait in line to enter. Inside, there were various hot spring areas for students to explore, along with some interactive games that kept them thoroughly engaged. There were also exhibits detailing the history of hot springs and how they have modernized to attract younger people to understand and enjoy the hot spring experience. In Hong Kong, there aren't many opportunities to enjoy hot springs, so this visit allowed students to learn about this aspect of culture. Having completed our four-day journey, we headed to the airport to prepare for our return to Hong Kong. Upon arriving at the airport lounge, the students didn't forget to complete their learning booklets and reflection cards. I greatly appreciated their commitment and understood that this was a valuable learning opportunity that they cherished. The goal of this overseas trip was to broaden the students' horizons, allowing them to understand different cultures and gain diverse knowledge to prepare for their futures. Seeing the students' joy, we will continue to strive to provide them with varied learning experiences, hoping they become proactive learners in their own right. |
